The small peninsula,
where the heart of the old city lies has been inhabited
6.000 years ago. Two thousand years
ago, after conquering the inhabitants Histri,
the Romans established their colony called Parentium,
on this location.
During its turbulent past, the city was ruled by Byzantium, the Venetian
Republic, Napoleon's France, Austro-Hungarian Monarchy,
Italy and finally Yugoslavia.
Today, Porec is a real tourist metropolis of Croatian
tourism, due to of the advantages of the climate,
a mixture of blue Istria and green Istria (the interior
of Istria, especially world famous wines and olive
oils), historical sights, a large selection of accommodation
units of all types and also due to the proximity of most
Central European countries.
With over 3,850 sunny hours per year, the sea temperature
in summer can rise to 28 °C.

The old town is a cultural monument in itself.
The most notable religious complex is the Euphrasian Church with a basilica from the 6th century.
The mosaics that decorate the interior and facade of the church are among
the most beautifully preserved works of Byzantine art.
